The catcher in the rye: holden's encounters and interactions with other people?

I think that in the beginning of the book Holden's reaction towards other people were more cynical and perhaps a little mean-spirited in nature. As the book progressed Holden seemed to become more sympathetic, understanding and even a little fond of other people he encountered. Perhaps that is a sign of his maturity, his beginning to finally grow up.
