Boyfriend was breathing heavy while making out?

He had his pants on and shirt off, we were making out on the bed and he started breathing real, real heavy in my face ontop of me. Heavier than I've ever heard him breathe. Then all of a sudden midway through he just got off me and stopped entirely. Was wondering why? Was he trying to control himself so we didn't have then?
