Simple citizenship question?

i was born and raised in America, making me an American citizen. If i were to go somewhere else, like Canada for example, and give up my American citizenship, does that mean that I'm no longer an American? I know that you're allowed to have dual citizenship, i'm just wondering if i were to denounce my American citizenship, would mean that i'm no longer an American citizen?
