Does nickel plating hardware rust???

Does nickel plating hardware rust??? i was wondering because i have a horse, and for his western saddle, i need a plate. (for people that don't know what that is, it is a piece of equipment that holds the saddle in place when you gallop at rodeos). so, anyway, most of the hardware on it is nickel plating hardware, and only one piece of it, is stainless steel. i already know that stainless steel does not rust, but i am not sure about the nickel plating. so, Does nickel plating hardware rust??????? =)
