Can someone please solve my coving nightmare????

We are trying to put coving up in or living room,was going ok until we came to the chimney where we need external corners. We have spent HOURS trying to get the angles right but are getting nowhere. We have a mitre box but still can't get the angles right whatever we do. Has anyone got any tips?
